OK, everyone might want different things from their cars, but I like the edginess of driving a high power RWD car.

I'd do that. But here in the Peoples Republic of Pointless Rules and Repression we now have to have repairs certified by a professional windscreen repairer. And present that certificate at the yearly vehicle inspection.
It's a ding in a windscreen FFS.
If the GTD drives like all the reports on the interweb says, that's worth the money on it's own.
Plus, it's nearly unique, you'll not see one at every corner.
Remember, numbers don't add up to nothin'.
I'm not saying it definitively is the problem, it is one of the first things you check when carrying out diagnosis of the issue becuse it is easiest to remedy.
As for which gears it may clash in, all synchro cones aren't created equal, like most things mechanical, often first and maybe second...
