I'm sure they did exactly that. What you're going to find when you poll a representative cross-section of current consumers is not necessarily the response you get when you sample the opinions of a long-time dedicated fanbase.
The question is not "did they get feedback from likely customers"...
For the hell of it I decided to paste up a quick illustration/comparison of the 650 and Camaro rear ends:
The obvious conclusion, IMO, is:
Yep, they're similar; and
The Mustang is a lot better looking car.
The decklid panel is an odd little piece of "tradition" that has its pros and cons. I mean, there were black panels on, what, three years of the first gen? And so thirty-odd years later it got brought back as an aftermarket piece for the s197s and Ford finally added it on in production for two...
I think the tails on my '13 may have been the best-looking ever, yeah.
I like the tail lights on my '20 better than the '16 I had just before it. I waited for a few years into the 550 model to get a better car, and I haven't been disappointed.
To some degree it's a form-follows-function thing. Newer technologies bring new design freedoms. Why are we imitating the proportions of exterior lights from forty years ago (to the extent that we are)? Because folks "know" how a car is supposed to look?
To state the obvious, Mustangs have...
These are entirely different parts than those on the Mach-E.
They're not even particularly close.
Frankly, a design somewhere between this one and the Mach-E might have been better. These are a little bit toy-like.
