Yeah that's the part that concerns me too. Some of the Toyota Tundra I-Force Max issues come to mind.
OK, we don't get those. Imagine trying to recycle all these Chinese Ev's in 15 years time? I reckon there'll be quite a few LS conversions

No doubt, but I want less complexity in my car, not more.
Imagine trying to revive an old hybrid or EV in 30 years time? Yet we still have F40's, Testarossa's and any number of classic 60 plus year old American iron running around.
try to revive a C4 Corvette

Electrolytic capacitors leaking due to old age and destroying circuit boards

Parts like blend door actuators not being available OEM or in the aftermarket.

Ignition systems (OptiSpark) being taken out by leaking water pumps

Radios and amplified speakers ( Bose) failing with only a few people rebuilding them, actually nobody services the radios that I know of and only a couple of guys are doing the amos

The digital dash displays failing....

Oh newer cars? Hey that OnStar system or telematics rendered useless because 3G cell service was discontinued. Oh and 4G is going to be obsolete at some point making that infotainment system in the dash as useful as a VCR

Anyone see a CD player in a new car in the last 6 years?

Wait til you try to keep an 2024 mustang running in 25 years

Ever heard of aftermarket part vendors?

I can buy anything I need for my 60 year old mustang made with aftermarket parts tooling.

If there is a market for it, there will be parts support for it. It's not like technology is going to die in 25 years, or people won't be fixing cars

UTG has been doing a few videos about that

They made millions of those early Mustangs. They sold Millions of fox bodies. Haven't even sold 750,000 S650/550's yet. Will be interesting to see what the 'classic' market looks like 30 years.

I wasn't talking about as new restoration. Just keeping a car going in good order.
And, it's quite amazing what some restorers can do. Like rebuilding a 1980's Alfa dash display in "Home Built by Jeff".

When manufacturers stop supporting the software ( think Microsoft ) we are FUBAR'd

Want to replace what is essentially the fuse box under the hood of a car? Ooops that is a module, IF you have a certain level of software in your shop you can rewrite the VIN and other information so the car will function.

Otherwise it has to have manufacturer level software that you pay thru the nose to get access to. At some point that support will go away trust me.

I have a friends bike in my shop, he runs the same aftermarket computer in his bike I run in mine. The computer has not been made in a few years. I know the computer is bad. I emailed the manufacturer and it is one of the larger ones for aftermarket V Twin electronics.

I asked them if I could sent the unit in for a bench test and repair.

Their response was the unit is obsolete and they can not repair them because some of the chips on the board are obsolete so they won't service them due to unavailability of parts.

I have 2 Ford products in the shop with ABS lights on. Both need ABS Modules and they need dealer level programming to get them to work in the car. The guy that does my dealer level stuff charges $250 just to walk in the door.

Those ABS Module replacements are going to run $1400, and these cars are not worth fixing IMHO.

Much of what I see in our shop is software, signal and wiring issues.

Go look what connectors cost. I'm seeing 3 wire connector pigtails costing almost $100 OEM with no aftermarket support

My 87 Alfa Milano needs ABS/Wheel speed sensors.

They are made out of unobtanium.

We have not found a suitable replacement for them

When I needed a spare key for my 74 GTV2000, I called The Paddock in CT (Where Roger Barr works) as they are a known Alfa guru with knowledge of where parts can be found, The Paddock sent me to a place in California, he didn't have any, but he said there was a guy in Australia who had them. I had to look half way around the world to Australia to find a key blank for an Italian car. Gave him my CC number and a pic of the keys and he sent me cut keys that worked. Right now the GTV is at a shop out of state having the FI pump pulled so it can be sent to Washington state to be rebuilt.

But, you're happy, right?
I'm envious. I should have bought one I saw here 2 years ago. Immaculate, $NZ30,000.
I was so rapt up in the thing I didn't even notice the Ferrari Roma next to it.

No doubt. I just gave the 2000 Tacoma to my grand daughter and it ran like the day I bought it new for my daughter. Just looked at the window sticker and it was $19K plus $1100 for some neat aluminum wheels with Michelin tires that lasted forever.

The ONLY repairs were a leaky valve cover and new belts besides book maintenance. That on a 2025 Mustang.....has to be better than any Jay Leno joke. There is a day of reckoning coming for all cars on the road today. It won't be pretty. More than ever, car technicians will be in demand and there won't be very many of them. It's called planned obsolescense, not progress.
