Oil cooler activation /deactivation

Does anyone know if the oil cooler on the DH/PP is active 24/7? Or does is get activated once it hits a certain temp and deactive below a certain temp? Im worried about the winter months that it will never get up to temp.

I have a '22 Mach 1 HP. I suspect the systems I have transitioned directly to the DH HP.

Mine has a factory oil cooler. There's no temperature control. Simple line in/out to the cooler.

The Manual Transmission cooler works same: no temperature control.

An electrical pump is involved with the diff, to move fluid to/from the cooler. It is temperature controlled.

Regarding temps, I've driven in 30F / -1C temps (nothing more than a chilly day in most parts of the country, I agree) without issue. The engine takes longer to warm up, but will come up to temps.

As the colder oil heads back to the engine, there is another variable involved: the engine coolant thermostat; it will simply not open as soon as, or as often as, it normally would. I'd also expect the fans to operate less, if at all.

Everything operates as a system, keeping things in a desired temperature band, while being capable of shedding additional heat when necessary.

I've not read of anyone in the NE who has experienced problems. Some do drive their cars throughout the Winter season. Switching over to Blizzaks is the only mod they make to their cars.

For the engine and drivetrain as a whole, expect longer warm-ups, faster heat loss and lower operating temperatures, but not so low additional action is required.

I drive my performance package GT, with the oil cooler, year round and have no issues here in SE Michigan. Through several blizzards this past year on a 25 mile drive to my office on the expressway and not a problem.

And as said, the only modification for the winter has been to swap to my snow tires and wheels for the winter

I have Pirelli Scorpion, only because they couldn't get the Blizzak for me when I needed to get a new set. The car handles fine. I don't add any weight to the car and have never felt the need to do so. Besides, adding that weight to the trunk sets up issues - you increase the stopping distance due to more weight and if you do have a problem and slide into a ditch, that weight will continue moving. It will go right through the fold down seat and is now aimed at YOU, but your head will conveniently stop it from continuing to move forward.

Yes, I do know for sure. The Dark Horse with the oil cooler does have a thermostatic Valve in the filter mount assembly. Although Ford does not announce the temperature of operation, I can verify that at the track the valve closes off the oil cooler flow @ 204°F. Understand this, Ford built this valve assembly to always allow some bypass into the cooler so there is never a thermal shock when it initially opens.
