Just a note - he is not running the factory active exhaust setup. His is aftermarket.
That is correct; it is the AWE Switchpath. However, the Switchpath uses the OE connectors, so the valves are controlled as far as opening and closing in the same way as the stock mufflers.

The factory system is designed with protective logic, and under higher loads, the added backpressure from closed valves can cause the PCM to intervene. This isn't exclusive to aftermarket systems—even the stock exhaust in Quiet Mode can trigger this behavior under the right (or wrong) conditions. It’s essentially the vehicle safeguarding itself from excessive restriction. As OP suggested, removing restriction will clear this CEL right away.

If you’ve got an AWE SwitchPath system and you're dealing with a persistent CEL, our team is here to support. Drop us a line with the specific code and conditions that caused it, and we’ll help troubleshoot from there. No guesswork—just real support from folks who live and breathe this stuff. 🛠🙌

I absolutely love the AWE exhaust. My wife was sitting in the paddock and said she knew each time I was coming down the front straight because of how deep of a tone the exhaust has. She said most of the other cars sound like motorcycles. 😂

^ 👍🏻😎

Was just about to say, that the cel would seem to imply ‘it’ (the tune?) detected an unexpected backpressure anomaly, next stop melted cat (or at least that’s what it’s anticipating). Would it have self cleared when the detected condition changes, run in open exhaust (does it take approximately the same amount of time for it to ‘self adjust’ as it takes to clear emissions test when battery reset is performed?)

I shut the car down and restarted it before I cleared the code, and it did not display the CEL upon restart. I suspect I could have run again in track mode and had no issues even without using Forscan to clear the code.

How were your temps?

As I recall, these were the temps at the time it threw the CEL
CHT 230
EOT 260
Trans 215

In the later afternoon sessions I saw CHT up to 250, engine oil up to 289 and transmission at 221.

A rare (and awesome) moment. Thank you for taking the time to find our FAQ on CEL codes before I had the chance to drop the link! 💪

This is a very informative video for anyone struggling with a CEL. Our support staff can help most effectively when given all of the information possible.

It looks like in this current instance support is not necessary, but for future browsing forum users, this is a great opportunity to learn and help us help you. 🙌

You should not be using quiet mode at the track or with extended WOT. Quiet mode is limited at WOT to .60 or 60% open. Do not use quiet mode at the track.

Are you talking about AWE or factory?

Is it ok to cruise in quiet mode? My young daughter does not like my Dark Horse due to the noise, so I often hit the Quiet Mode button when she is in the car.

You should not have any issues just cruising in quiet mode with factory or aftermarket exhaust. That is a much different use case than on the track at sustained high rpm.

I can only comment on OEM active exhaust and cruising and messing around in quiet is fine. Extended WOT pulls or track duty would be a no for sure.

We can help keep the temps down now since we can tune them by disabling the DFCO or decel fuel cut off. That will keep fuel going into the cylinders when you tip out of the gas pedal at high RPM. That helps keep the pistons cool as well as the cats if you still have them. This is how we keep cats happy for boosted mustangs. DFCO OFF>
