Spoiler module not being fully glued down

Hey everyone, I did the dark horse spoiler swap on my car, and in the spots the tape didn’t go over on the underside of the module, it pops up ever so slightly. I used the tape that came with the spoiler, which is from ford performance, but it seems the module isn’t fully taped down to the trunk, I poured water on it and water seems to enter through the small crevice, will this be an issue? I’m thinking of taking it off and taping the whole perimeter but that’s gonna be a pain in the ass to go through. Water passed the crevice and comes out the bottom of the spoiler module, running down the trunk. Worried about water entering the trunk, any thoughts?

I don’t think water will enter the trunk, as the module is tacked on the the back of it.

You also said water enters the crevice, but might be stopped by the tape underneath. Until you actually see water leaking inside, I’d leave it.

The bolts should be more than enough to hold the spoiler on, so the tape is just a finishing detail For the ends to stay flat.

Now it’s down to how much it bugs you. If you take the spoiler off and are ready to peel off all that tape and start over, get a tube of black silicone caulk and run a bead all around the inner perimeter to keep the 3M tape dry and keep water out.

If you do pull the spoiler off, you shouldn’t have to pull the whole module off, but don’t pull too hard or you WILL break the seal of the module 3M tape (ask me how I know) and have to do that all over again.

If you don’t want the hassle of doing it all over, but the water still bugs you, you can get some very thin black foam …maybe 1/16” insulation tubing and jam it in the seam with a plastic razor.

I was thinking of trying to just redo this part without taking the spoiler off.. but it seems like it’s not gonna be easy to detach the tape from the trunk lid, with the spoiler in the way.

The module is barely stuck onto the trunk from factory, when i first swapped my spoiler the trunk module came out off in all of 10 seconds it was more padding than tape. When I replaced the spoiler with a cheap dark horse handling wing I spent a
Bunch of time taking off the factory tape from the module and put new tape. I realized I didnt like the handling pack spoiler all that much and switched to a body colored gt pp wing. Taking the module off the trunk that time was a huge pita like 50 times worse than originally. So after hours of getting the tape off the trunk lid i was ready to install my new to me spoiler. This time I out very little tape on the trunk module, were talking 2, 5-6in strips thats all. It sits flush on the trunk, I have had zero issues with it.

I wonder why mine didn’t end up sitting flush? There’s just 2 spots where the module slightly bulges up and makes it where water gets through. Maybe I just did something wrong? I know it will be a pita so that’s why I’m wondering if I should leave it or not, I could go through it all again and have the same issue. If you pour water in the crevice where it attached does water come out from under the module?

Water will drip from under the module and down the trunk by design. Mine did that stock, which is one of the benefits of getting the black one piece trunk trim vs the 2 piece ones that are offered. The one piece covers that up, so you don't end up with water spots running down your trunk after a wash. Under the module the trunk is shaped weird, I believe this is to provide a channel for water to travel around the bolt locations. From factory the module tape does bot go all the way a-crossed there are gaps. If it concerns you though, pull the module and retape it and make sure you have a buddy help you apply pressure. My wife helps me . At one point I ran the spoiler module for a couple week with no tape, washed it, got it up to 75mph and noticed no issues with it staying on the trunk or having any water intrusion issues.

Ahhh okay, so water getting into that crease isn’t a big deal then. I was going to put tape all the way across but just did it how it was when I took it off. It came with these pre cut strips that matched the ones under the module. I’m not sure I want to go through all of that to fix it, it’s not even noticeable honestly, just a slight bulge, the spoiler pretty much covers it. I think I would need to take the spoiler off to do it anyways as I would probably have to pry it from the crease. Probably will just leave it and keep an eye on water getting into the trunk, I was worried about the backup camera wiring too but it’s flush in the middle.

That module just wants to sit up off that edge and needs that tape on the edge to lock it down. You should have run a fat strip the entire length and loaded up both surfaces first with 3M adhesive prep.

Mine sticks up because I broke the seal pulling up the original spoiler and didn’t notice what happened until after I put the blackout panel on back which locks the trunk and module together. so to fix it proper I’d have to remove the blackout panel AND module, and I don’t feel like going through that hell.

Now you have to decide to live with it or go through the tedious task of removing the whole thing and starting over.

OK that said, if that section sticking up has no tape, you can carefully undo the bolts, and lift up the module just enough to slide in a section of 3M tape to lock that section down. It is possible. I was able to lift the edge without even unbolting the module by prying up the edge with plastic trim remover tools and propping up with popsicle sticks. I had enough room to slide in a small section of 3M tape. I managed to improve it a bit.

Sadly I can’t lift up the sides, the tape goes along the whole module, but there was a gap in between the two provided strips, it was how it was when I pulled it off with the gaps. I’m not sure why it’s not sticking down there as there should be tape in that spot it’s bulging out. The look of it doesn’t bother me, but water can enter in that spot and it drains down through the module out the bottom onto the actually trunk piece, and I was worried of water either leaking into the trunk space, or messing with the camera wiring. I really would hate to redo it because I’m not sure if I can get it off without taking the spoiler off. When I put it on it was not pushed all the way in and I had to pull it off and redo the tape with some spare 3m I had laying around and idk if the two tapes are different thicknesses and maybe that’s what happen, I’m not sure, but when it got stuck I thought I’d never get it off lol. I really want to fix it if it will be a issue, but kinda wana make sure it’s worth fixing before I go through a day of pain and tears. Lol
