Change seatbelt for different color

I would like to change my seatbelt for a different color that matches the exterior.

Now I looked up if universal seatbelt would do the trick. A garage next to me sells and installs seatbelts in different colors and they use universal seatbelts.

My question with modern cars is, is it safe and okay to change the seatbelt or does the Mustang has some extra safety features that only work with OEM seatbelts?

The seat belt system has a pretensioner system with a pyrotechnic charge that ignites in the event of an accident. That is tied into the vehicle's computer, so if it is disconnected I expect you will receive a warning on the restraint system and you will be giving up the safety feature of the pretensioner.

If you are replacing the whole seat belt assembly, then yes, you will not have the pretensioner.

OEM unless you want a constant airbag light on

Under FMVSS 208, I would argue putting in aftermarket belts and not retaining the pre-tensioners is an issue for a shop.

and I quote from a NHTSA opinion

" A manufacturer, distributor, dealer, or motor vehicle repair business may not knowingly make inoperative any part of a device or element of design installed on or in a motor vehicle or motor vehicle equipment in compliance with an applicable safety standard prescribed under this chapter unless the manufacturer, distributor, dealer, or repair business reasonably believes the vehicle or equipment will not be used (except for testing or a similar purpose during maintenance or repair) when the device or element is inoperative. "

NOW that being said there are several companies out their that repair and restore seat belt mechanisms including rewebbing them

Okay, I will look at companies who can replace only the fabric thing. Pretty sure there are some specialists.

I saw some cheap businesses who just cut and attach the new belt. That looks so cheap and dangerous. So I'll look at a specialist who can replace the whole fabric and keep the OEM pretensioner.

I haven't checked into it, but that would be the route I would choose if I were looking to change the belt color.
