So - is this any different than building the faster "old fashioned" drag car ?? Make the right mods, reduce weight where you can, make sure it can hook up - then add as much power as she will hold off the line???? The formula is well known? No big mystery? BTW - if I would be inclided to go...
So - I have been impressed how eager mustang owners are to mod their rides. If weight is a big concern - start removing/swapping parts to save some weight. Here is a list for a BMW e9x (not M3 specific) that lists some ideas to get started ... need a list for the s650.
Easily removable weight...
I hate to admit it - but I paid extra for the active exhaust for the quite mode - so I could stay on speaking terms with my neighbors ... The quite start mode was the first thing i setup on the car.
Yes - mine is the premium with active exhaust and the 401(?) option package came in right under $53K with some haggling. The expensive performance package and magnetic shocks would have pushed it over 60k. The M2 fell into the same bucket as the Dark Horse for me - paying some capabilities I...
So I have been driving many BMWs for many years - and I have to say that I am very much liking the s650. For me, its a daily driver, similar use as my M3 (early years) - and there is a lot going for this latest Mustang. Put the active exhaust in quite mode, and you could avoid the Commiefornia...
The price was $73K - did not have the carbon package - but had multiple smaller options like heads-up display, optional paint and a few other similar. It started at $66K with no options.
You did well - and leasing sure avoids the maintenance headaches - since BMW covers all the scheduled maintenance for that period. For me - using 2026 dollars - I was looking at an extra $20K for the M2.
To finish up this post - for those who may not know, the e9x was the only BMW 3 series to ever have a v8. The majority had a straight 6 or 4. The v8 (s65) was very high tech for its time.
The following youtube video does a decent job in showing what goes into a typical s65:
I am still...
Very nice!! I thought hard about the M2 ... maybe it was the $$$ difference. Every time I priced the M2 - I started to bump up to the M3/M4 & Porsche price range. I would have to get a second job - and at my age, having a tough time with one.
For some of the younger readers ... similar to the Mustang special editions, such as the Dark Horse - the e9x M3 also had a special edition ... the GTS.
Yep - My wife has a 2020 GTI, 6 speed manual. Daily driver. Good acceleration, handles well. Its gotten bigger and heavier, but still feels small next to the s650. Nice interior and lots of luggage space - can't beat the efficient hatchback for that. Friend of mine move from Chicago to Columbus...
The well documented issues with throttle actuators and rod bearing are just two things I expect to avoid with the coyote engine. The coyote is well developed, mature and very solid - good for 200K?
I forgot to add in my original post - I spent 1 year (way too long) looking at cars. This include the BRZ/GR86, Nissan Z, Acura Integra Type S, and the BMW M2. Lots of research and test drives ... and more research. I guess a reason this dragged out for me was that there was nothing that bowled...
For me, Its hard to put into words, but there is something special about the M3 with that s65 engine...
BTW - Saw the specs on your car - nice - how do you like the 3.73 gearing?
I wish they had the 2 series with the six cylinder and a manual - I would have considered that. I looked at the 2025 M2 - but I found I liked the s650 more.
The R8 was thought the be the best "practice exotic" - got lots of great press. Was/is it really that good - especially compared to the C7? Can't believe the wife approved - impressive. My wife is very cheap - sorry, I mean frugal. The best I could do on any more cars is that she is now driving...
FYI : for those who think the 20 year old car can't hang ...

"For less than $70,000, the M3 bolts from a standstill to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds and turns the quarter-mile in 12.7 seconds at...
Even more noticeable when I jump into the M3 after just driving the Mustang, the M3 seems so small ... the Mustang hood seems to go on for ever. Still getting used to taking corners with the car.
