Lower ring tension, much more precise machining, better metallurgy and oil quality all reduce the long drawn out break ins we used to do. Not to mention fuel and ignition mapping engine designers would have killed for 50 years...

Absolutely. I use fuelio app to track mileage, costs, etc. I was amazed to see on my last car, when I changed from 98 E10 gas to straight 98, and fitted Mich PS5's which have quite low rolling resistance, that fast cruising economy improved by 10%. The best I'd seen on that car.

It's always worth putting the battery on charge when something like that happens. Modern cars are ridiculously voltage sensitive.
