Exactly, in terms of it's architecture, I suspect Automotive News are simply repeating what Autocar magazine reported a couple of months back. And that was likely nothing more than assumptions based on Ford's own announcement back in January 2019, when they said they were downsizing to "5...
OK, before everyone claims the sky is falling, here's the full quote from the Ford employee on Blue Oval Forums I was referring to:
==============================================================================================================
"From what I’ve gathered and seen, yes the S650 will...
This gels with information from a Ford employee on Blue Oval Forums who states S650 will use the current platform, but use elements of CD6. He even said it will be called D5 (so, D2C + CD6 = D5) and I've not seen that referenced anywhere else. This is the same employee who stated he'd seen the...
Good find TN! (and you've been missed!).
So....
2022 S650 launches as a '23MY (lasts 3 years)
2025 S650 refresh as a '26MY (lasts 5 years)
2030 S750 launches as a '31MY
For reference
2014 S550 launches as a '15MY (lasts 3 years model years)
2017 S550 refresh as an '18MY (lasts 5 years model...
I absolutely agree with you there. It would be fantastic to have a bespoke platform for Mustang. But, as I said earlier, in 6 generations, Mustang has never had a truly bespoke platform. Mega-$$ sports and supercars aside, there are very few sporty cars that have unique platforms these days. Or...
Well, if reports are true, S650 won't be an "SUV" platform as S650 will be heavily based on the existing S550 platform. S750 will, allegedly, utilize the CD6 platform around '27/'28. True, that currently underpins the Lincoln Aviator and Ford Explorer, but it was an architecture designed to be...
The C8 is not direct competition to the Mustang. It's not a pony car. If Ford moved to a mid-engine layout, sales would fall off a cliff. The reason the Mustang is the best selling "sports car" in the world is because it delivers a fantastic package. Great looks, great performance and usable...
I doubt it will be lighter........not unless they incorporate more aluminum in the construction. It could certainly afford to lose a few pounds, but without an all new platform (which sounds like we'll have to wait for '27/'28 and S750) I can't see it happening.
If S650 is heavily based on S550, and still features a n/a V8 engine (I'm pretty sure the hybrid will only be an option in the US and the V8 will still be available) and I'm confident it's going to be a better car than the S550. Looks will be subjective, but as a driving machine, it will be an...
As much as I love the S197's retro styling that was the only retro-stang we had. Back in '65, the Mustang was a thoroughly modern design, taking cues from Europe's finest. Which is pretty much what the S550 did.
Let's give the new guy a chance. Sure, he may have only been involved in FWD application on his resume, but who's to say he's not a Mustang enthusiast and/or has knowledge of what makes a good RWD platform? Besides, its more Tom Barnes that will be responsible for how it drives and it's Mr...
S550 was developed during a huge recession, with Detroit having announced bankruptcy. When you're at rock bottom, things can only get better. Pushing through with S550 has been one of Ford's bigger successes :)
Tom Barnes is still with Team Mustang. His name was mentioned a couple of times by Jim Owens during the Mach 1 launch. Tom is a lovely gent, I had the pleasure of meeting him outside the Henry Ford Museum a few years back :)
Good info, yet again Sir!
I'd assumed Carl Widmann would have still been the Chief Engineer for S650. As most will know, Dave Pericak was Chief Engineer for S550 through development to production. He was then promoted to head up Ford Performance and is now head of "Icons". Carl Widmann took...
This info fits with what was reported here:
https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1127868_ford-mustang-hybrid-reportedly-not-coming-until-2023-redesign
"As for the redesigned Mustang, it was confirmed in February via a job ad listing to be arriving in 2022 as a 2023 model. It's code-named the...
No, that'd be late 2022 (calendar year) that S550 production ends and S650 starts production as a '23MY. Certainly September is the usual cutover.....although this year (or rather next!) its being pushed out to January.
Timing wise, that would make sense. If it's still launching in 2022 as a '23MY, I'd expect to see the first prototypes early next year (calendar year 2021). As it appears S650 will be a heavily modified S550, it will likely be able to hide in plane sight, at least initially. They could start...
