Back in the 70's fuel prices were fixed by law here. The boss knew when a price rise was coming and would fill the tanks the day before. A nice little extra profit, and exactly what the thieving fuel companies are doing now on a mega scale.
Yes, it is a wear item, but there's also an expectation of a certain lifespan. If the driver uses launch control just twice, a feature provided by the manufacturer, I don't see failure in 8000 miles to be acceptable.
