I don't know about that. We wrinklies (and younger ones) mostly learnt to drive manuals, and I've done quite a few licence tests in manuals, I've not seen a gearbox or clutch fail.

Yeah, same here. But things do get a bit more difficult. And you bleed more. The number of times I've done some fettling and discovered blood running from a finger or arm that I didn't know I'd scraped.
Literally thin skinned.
OK, that's not excessive, but it is more than mine uses. Type of driving conditions could account for that.
Having said that, it does sound like a valve guide seal issue, which isn't usually a head off matter.
I never locked my only convertible, and never left anything of value in it.
it did have an alpine perimeter alarm system, for whatever that was worth.
It was never attacked, but that was 23 years ago and people are much shittier now.
