My EB super base model 100A equipment group does not have a key IN the ignition. I think Alan might have meant "while the car is on" (or at least in accessory mode)

Does your friend have a brake light out? I don't really think this is what's happening, but typically the blinker will hyper-flash to indicate you have a bulb out. Pretty neat if this is a real option!

Do you have the A/C or heater cranked to the max setting? Pretty sure the AS/S is disabled within certain ambient temperatures and/or if you have the climate controls set to the max.

I have a way different engine (EB), but I have also noticed a very faint coolant smell sometimes after the car has been at operating temp for a while. Never had any issues. Just wanted to jump in and perhaps alleviate some of your concern. Never seen any real change in my coolant levels.
