UPDATE: This is from an article released on 05/23/2026.
Novelis plans to restart Scriba hot mill damaged by fires within weeks

Impact of the Novelis Plant Fire on Ford Mustang Production

Overview of the Incident

A fire at the Novelis aluminum plant in Oswego, New York, has caused significant disruptions in the automotive industry. This facility is a crucial supplier of aluminum, providing about 40% of the aluminum used by the U.S. auto industry. The fire, which occurred on September 16, 2025, has led to a prolonged shutdown of operations.

Effects on Ford Mustang Production

The shutdown of the Novelis plant directly affects the production of the Ford Mustang for several reasons:
  • Aluminum Supply: The plant supplies aluminum used in various components of the Mustang, including body panels and structural elements.
  • Production Delays: Analysts predict that the fire could lead to delays in the production of thousands of vehicles, including the Mustang. Estimates suggest that the impact could affect between 20,000 to 50,000 trucks and other models.
  • Broader Industry Impact: While the Mustang is specifically affected, the disruption extends to other Ford models and various automakers that rely on Novelis for aluminum. This interconnectedness means that delays in one model can ripple through the production schedules of others.
Current Status and Future Outlook

As of now, Novelis is working to restore operations at the Oswego plant, with expectations to restart the hot mill by late in the second quarter of 2026. However, the ramp-up period may take additional time, prolonging the impact on production schedules for the Mustang and other vehicles.

In summary, the fire at the Novelis plant poses a significant challenge for Ford Mustang production, leading to potential delays and supply chain disruptions that could affect the broader automotive market.

Key 2025 U.S. Aluminum‑Plant Fire Events (Chronological)

1. September 16, 2025 — Major fire destroys the hot mill

  • A late‑night fire leveled the hot mill, the core of Novelis’ aluminum‑sheet production.
  • This plant supplies ~40% of all U.S. automotive aluminum sheet.
  • Production halted until early 2026, forcing automakers to scramble for supply.
  • 26 fire departments and 175 firefighters responded.
2. October 10, 2025 — Second fire during recovery efforts
  • A smaller fire struck the same facility while repairs from the September blaze were underway.
  • Raised concerns about system vulnerabilities and the timeline for restarting operations.
3. Late November 2025 — Third fire in the same hot‑mill area
  • Broke out in the same section as the September fire.
  • Fire crews controlled it by mid‑morning; full extinguishment confirmed later in the day.
  • Damage extent still unclear at the time, but automakers braced for more delays.
Industry Impact in 2025

Ford (most severely affected)

  • F‑150 production cut by over 50%.
  • Expedition and Navigator production idled.
  • F‑150 Lightning production paused indefinitely.
  • Estimated financial impact: up to $2 billion from the first fire alone.
Other automakers
  • Stellantis paused Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer production for three weeks.
  • Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, and Volkswagen reported supply‑chain disruptions.
Why these fires mattered so much
  • The Oswego/Scriba Novelis plant is the largest U.S. automotive‑aluminum sheet supplier.
  • It produces 350,000+ metric tons annually and supplies 10 major automakers.
  • With the hot mill destroyed, no other U.S. rolling mill had enough spare capacity to fill the gap.
Summary

In 2025, the U.S. aluminum industry experienced three major fires, all at the Novelis Oswego/Scriba, NY plant, causing the most significant automotive‑aluminum supply disruption in modern U.S. manufacturing. These fires directly affected production of the Ford F‑150, F‑150 Lightning, Expedition, Navigator, and multiple Stellantis and Toyota models

Across all three fires — September, October, and November/December 2025 — no official cause was ever released. Authorities and Novelis repeatedly stated that the incidents were under investigation, and no findings were published.

Posting this at a time when many people are awaiting sc scheduling is misleading and negligent. There hasn’t been any confirmed link to these fires and a change or delay to production. The only known delay is due to the black painted roof which is a separate issue

Are you privy to unknown delays? I'll answer that for you - no, you're not. Ford has been scrambling for months to resource material supply to fill the void.

Are you aware of any known delays ? I’ll answer that for you as well, no you are not. Ford said the vehicles will be available summer 2026. They announced this after all of those fires happened. If they thought that would impact the production of the SC then they wouldn’t have given that timeframe and would’ve provided a later date. So the fact that he is quoting fires that predated fords announcement of the SC is not really relevant. And you for talking ford scrambling is also not following a logical thought process.

Again, your post is mislead and misrepresenting information. The article you are referencing from 5/23/26 is about then reopening in a few weeks, which would be perceived as a positive. You intentionally referenced outdated information in your post to create a false narrative at a time people are looking for their mustangs to be produced. Please do better.

In a word...yeah, I am.

I inquired, just for you. And this is all you get.

"All of the SCs are delayed and the 970As are going to be more limited than the previous CFTPs."

So there you go, bonus answer and all. Who made that statement? Again, you're not privy.

@Snoopy49 has been helping guys for years tracking their order status. Pretty sure he has a car on order too, so he’s got skin in the game. What would be his motivation for misleading?
As for hanging your hat on ford’s “summer of 2026” date, I guess you weren’t around for any of fords vehicle launches in the past few years.

Oh you inquired, just for me? How thoughtful. I wonder how connected you are that you got a response at 11 pm on a Sunday lol. Your post lacks any verifiable information, lacks who told you it was delayed, how long it’s delayed, and what’s the cause of the delay. Again, everyone is speculating at this point. The way has it’s been is cars are usually built approx 2 months later after they are scheduled. Ford has said production starts mid July with deliveries in summer 26. So logically cars should start to be scheduled within the next few weeks. If there is no movement by then that’s when we should acknowledge a delay. Until then assuming there’s delay without solid proof is just irrational.

Actually i have been around. I also have a car on order as well. I have no idea what his motivation for this post was but I’m just saying that it’s negligent to create a sense of uncertainty and negativity without having proof. If the car is delayed it will be delayed, there is nothing any of us can do about it. But to say because the car has an aluminum hood and referencing the 3 fires is him connecting dots that none of us are sure should be connected and that’s why i said it’s misleading.

It's begins with a series of towers, interconnected in such a way as to allow near instantaneous transfer of data. You seem to confuse easily though so baby steps will have to do for now.
