You are correct, I should have clearly stated Paris. We made a number of stops between Bruges and Paris including a couple of nights in Reims. Everyone was lovely. But the attitudes started in Paris. Especially the way American women are treated by French men. Not all, of course, but enough to notice.I'm not sure the stereotype about the French is true. Maybe in Paris, but in the Charente where I live part of the time there is no arrogance. In actual fact they are very welcoming and tolerant of us 'Rosbeefs'. I think the French know they have a superior culture and food to most countries and just pity the others - not arrogance just reality!
Americans in France stick out like a very sore thumb and are a source of huge amusement. So gauche!
