Remove dash defroster vent grille? (Squeak/rattle)

Very annoying squeak + rattle from driver A-pillar base area. Removed A-pillar trim, did some diagnosing, and pretty sure the source is actually the defroster vent. It's missing cushioning underneath on the driver's side. I can push it and make it tap, whereas the passenger side does not. I saw a Reddit post of someone else having the same issue, pretty sure it's a factory assembly defect.

Does anyone know: can this piece of trim be removed without pulling the whole dash?
