Drift-Ready from the Factory: Inside the Development of the 2026 Mustang RTR

October 16, 2025

In partnership with @RTR Vehicles, Ford set out to create the most exciting, fun-to-drive, turbocharged Mustang ever. Hear from Ryan Shaughnessy, Mustang brand manager, and Vaughn Gittin, Jr., RTR Vehicles founder, about the inspiration and dedication behind the collaboration:

Ryan Shaughnessy: Vaughn, the RTR Package is about to hit the streets as the first factory-built Ford Mustang RTR. Take me back to where this whole idea started for you.

Vaughn Gittin, Jr.: Man, Ryan, this is such a pinch me moment that has been the dream since I launched RTR back in 2009. I was 29 years old with no real master plan except one thing: make Mustang cool and exciting for the next generation. I took Mustang drifting, went head-to-head with the cars and drivers that built the sport, and proved that a V8-powered American muscle car could throw down with the smaller and perceivably more nimble sports cars on their own turf. Now, 15-plus years later, we're showing what a factory-built, RTR-badged Mustang is all about. This is every bit as meaningful as any race I've ever won.

Ryan: And when you first came to us with this concept, I remember thinking – this is exactly the gap we need to fill in the lineup. We had GT, Dark Horse, and Mustang GTD covering the higher end, but we were missing that accessible entry point for younger performance buyers.

Vaughn: Exactly! We also had a challenge with our RTR-built, Mustang-based “Spec” models in which our starting prices really hurt the accessibility of many to be able to get into the Mustang and RTR family. That mutual want to create better accessibility made this partnership so perfect. You guys saw the same opportunity I did.

RTR has been building a very youthful fan base since day one and this factory-built Mustang RTR is the answer for younger buyers seeking a performance-focused Mustang, it has the same goals as any V8-powered model: take the fight to the world's best sports cars, elevate the brand, and have a ton of fun doing it. When we were developing this thing together, we baked as much Fun-Haver DNA into it as we could. I am very happy to say that this Mustang RTR is the true definition of Ready to Rock. It’s so fun to do any of the many things I like to do behind the wheel including Drifting, Hitting the twisty backroads, drag racing and is just a blast to drive.

S650 Mustang 2026 Mustang RTR: Drift-Ready from the Factory: Inside the Development {filename}

Ryan: Let's talk about why we chose the EcoBoost platform as the foundation for the RTR Package. I know some people might have expected us to go with a V8, but the EcoBoost just made so much sense for what we were trying to achieve, didn't it?

Vaughn: One hundred percent! The Mustang EcoBoost is so underrated in my opinion, it is such a fun car.

One of the standout features that I like over the V8 is the excellent 54/46 weight distribution. The front end feels sharper and nimbler right out of the gate and the power and weight balance of the turbocharged EcoBoost engine with the 10-speed automatic transmission is enough to put a smile on any driver’s face. The base suspension characteristics were great, but we had to make the handling truly special. It needed to be stiffer, and more responsive, especially for the drift performance we wanted to ensure it had.

S650 Mustang 2026 Mustang RTR: Drift-Ready from the Factory: Inside the Development {filename}

S650 Mustang 2026 Mustang RTR: Drift-Ready from the Factory: Inside the Development image

Ryan: And that's where we started pulling in all those Dark Horse components. I remember when we first tested the rear subframe swap – the transformation was immediate. The whole back end just planted itself differently.

Vaughn: Oh yeah, I was pumped when the mustang engineers suggested that rear subframe; it was a game-changer. Then we grabbed the front and rear sway bars from the Dark Horse Handling Pack to control the roll even more.

But you know what really put a smile on my face? Those adjustable strut top mounts from the Dark Horse Handling Pack. Allowing Mustang owners to adjust front camber to maximize the contact patch depending on the type of fun they are having behind the wheel is an element of being “Ready to Rock” when it comes to the chassis. I love the adjustability that allows owners to dial in their preferences.

S650 Mustang 2026 Mustang RTR: Drift-Ready from the Factory: Inside the Development image

Ryan: We spent a lot of time dialing in that unique drift-ready tune for the Track stability setting, too. It had to walk this fine line between keeping drivers safe but also letting them explore the limits and have fun.

Vaughn: I was very excited that we could create a bespoke Track mode stability control setting that allows our owners to drive a bit more sideways before it kicks in and straightens the car out, this is huge for the amateur. I do love that we are offering the MagneRide dampers as an option with an RTR- to give customers even more dynamic chassis control! We were so thorough in making sure our owners had all the answers we also created a Drift/Track alignment spec that any Ford dealer or good alignment shop can set up. It basically optimizes the toe and camber at all four corners to maximize that contact patch.

Ryan: The Brembo brakes from the GT Performance package – six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers – those were non-negotiable for us. If we're calling this drift-ready and track-capable, it needs to stop as well as it goes.

Vaughn: For sure. And on track, the driving experience is exactly what we wanted. The EcoBoost is already balanced and approachable, but the changes we made for RTR give it this more eager, engaging character. There's an accessibility to it that's most apparent on the skid pad. Mustang RTR makes it easier to achieve and control a slide, including that new steering gear with increased travel. We really did create the most badass turbocharged Mustang ever. Mission accomplished!

S650 Mustang 2026 Mustang RTR: Drift-Ready from the Factory: Inside the Development image

Ryan: Okay, we have to talk about the anti-lag system. When you first proposed this, I thought you were crazy. Anti-lag in a factory Mustang? Our engineering team had some serious debates about this one.

Vaughn: I'm still kind of shocked we figured out how to get it done! I know I pushed hard for the flame-spitting setup like you see in Formula Drift or World Rally, where excess fuel and spark party in the exhaust manifold to keep the turbo spooled...

Ryan: But that's when our engineering team got creative. They said, "We already have anti-lag technology – we just need to adapt it." This was originally developed for the Le Mans-winning Ford GT race car, but Ford is all about that race-to-road tech transfer and it’s exactly what we did here.

S650 Mustang 2026 Mustang RTR: Drift-Ready from the Factory: Inside the Development image

S650 Mustang 2026 Mustang RTR: Drift-Ready from the Factory: Inside the Development image

Vaughn: That was such a Ford move – taking proven racing technology and bringing it to the people. So yeah, RTR doesn't spit flames, but it keeps the turbo spooled for quicker responses to throttle inputs. This is especially noticeable when lifting off the throttle then getting back onto it fast in drifting or on the more technical road courses and autocross. I am pumped to have this Ford-patented anti-lag system in the Mustang RTR. Such a huge move!

Ryan: And we're putting out 315 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque from the factory, which is serious performance for this segment. But I'm really excited about that Ford Performance Parts plug-and-play tune we developed.

Vaughn: That 350 horsepower and 400 pound-feet FPP tune is killer. And the fact that it retains the factory warranty is great piece of mind. That extra power is super noticeable. It's exactly what enthusiasts want – accessible performance upgrades that don't void their warranty.

Ryan: We also made sure the Drift Brake and Active-Valve Performance Exhaust came standard. No point making people option into the core features that define the RTR experience.

Vaughn: That was so important to me, too. We touched as many parts of this vehicle as we could to create a complete experience.

Ryan: Now, styling – this is another place where RTR's DNA really comes through. I love the RTR signature grille lights on the upper grille. Tell me about the teams thinking behind that design.

Vaughn: Grille lights have become synonymous with RTR. When we concepted this in 2014, we wanted an unmistakable signature that when you see those lights in your rearview mirror, you'll know exactly what's about to pass you. For this vehicle We took the Mustang GT fascia and made it unmistakably RTR. The rear wing comes from Mustang GT Performance Pack, and the mirror caps, graphics, and badging all wear that Tarnish Dark Anodized finish.

Ryan: Another thing I love is how the optional Hyper Lime brake calipers pop behind those Tarnish Dark Anodized 19x9.5-inch RTR wheels. That 30-millimeter offset at all four corners really gives it an aggressive stance. And we're debuting Avalanche Gray as a new Mustang color with this car.

Vaughn: That color is perfect for RTR. Really shows off the body lines the graphics and the aggressive stance!

Ryan: We gave customers two interior options – the Hyper Lime accents with the Hyper Lime belts come standard or an owner can opt for a non-accented black interior. I figured some buyers would want that bold look with the Hyper Lime seat belts, stitching, and Drift Brake lever, while others might want something more understated. This mindset is brought to the exterior as well given that owners can get the standard Dark Tarnished graphics or opt for the Hyper Lime accents!

Vaughn: Gotta make it available to all, but we understand the Hyper Lime may not be for everyone. Either way, you're getting those unique co-branded lit sill plates, serialized IP badge, and the super-sick RTR-specific welcome and departure graphics that we developed exclusively for the Mustang RTR on the 12.4-inch digital cluster and 13.2-inch touchscreen. Every time you get in, you know you're in something special.

Ryan: This will go on sale Summer 2026. We’re making it available on EcoBoost High Package and EcoBoost Premium in Fastback body style. We haven’t announced pricing yet, but the whole point was making this vehicle more accessible to younger performance enthusiasts.

Vaughn: And this is just the beginning. I'm so excited to see this Mustang RTR we have worked so hard on with Ford finally get out there – giving young and young-at-heart enthusiasts a performance model that combines RTR's DNA and love of car culture with 60-plus years of Mustang history and drive to beat the world's best sports cars. That's what it's all about.

Ryan: Here's to the next chapter of Mustang performance.

Vaughn: Let's go have some fun.

The 2026 Ford Mustang RTR will be available for fans to see at the Formula Drift Season Finale in Long Beach, California October 17-18.

What The Experts Say

  • Laurie Transou, Mustang Chief Program Engineer —  “When we set out to develop a new kind of performance Mustang in partnership with Vaughn Gittin Jr. and RTR, our mission was simple: produce the most exciting, fun-to-drive turbocharged Mustang ever,” said Mustang Chief Engineer Laurie Transou. “We succeeded. This is Formula Drift championship-winning knowhow, Mustang EcoBoost balance and affordability, and the race-proven performance technology from Mustang Dark Horse in a factory-built Mustang, direct from Flat Rock Assembly. With the RTR Package, this Mustang is truly Ready to Rock.”
  • Vaughn Gittin, Jr., RTR Vehicles Founder  — “’Ready to Rock.’ That’s what RTR stands for, and it’s what’s driven us to develop a whole line of aftermarket Ford Mustangs and Broncos. But with Mustang RTR, we’re producing the most badass, factory-built, turbocharged Mustang ever,” said RTR Vehicles Founder Vaughn Gittin, Jr. “When I launched RTR in 2009 at 29, I had no plan beyond making Mustangs cool and exciting for the next generation. The 2026 Mustang RTR does just that.”

Mustang RTR Questions and Answers

  • What is Mustang RTR? Mustang RTR is the most thrilling, fun-to-drive turbocharged Mustang ever, drawing on components from Mustang GT and Dark Horse, the near-perfect weight distribution of Mustang EcoBoost, and the championship-winning drift knowledge of RTR Vehicles. It’s built at Flat Rock Assembly Plant like all Mustangs and is Ready to Rock from the factory.

  • Is Mustang RTR a package or a trim? “Mustang RTR” is used in shorthand, but officially this is a comprehensive and optional performance package for Mustang EcoBoost with the High Package and Mustang EcoBoost Premium with the Mid and High packages.

  • Does Mustang RTR have more power than Mustang EcoBoost? Mustang RTR is available with 315 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque and benefits from a standard anti-lag system for Mustang RTR only, which keeps the turbocharger spooled even while the driver is off the throttle, providing a more responsive driving character.

  • How does anti-lag in Mustang RTR work? Mustang RTR’s patented anti-lag was developed from the Le Mans-winning Ford GT race car and is only active in certain drive modes. While some systems rely on spark and excess fuel to keep the turbocharger spooled, this can cause high heat, excess fuel consumption, and emissions concerns. Ford’s anti-lag strategy operates while the engine is in a fuel cut condition, minimizing these undesirable conditions.

When the driver’s foot comes off the accelerator pedal, the throttle opens for a limited period of time. This keeps the turbocharger primed by operating the engine like a big air pump. Because the turbocharger speed is already elevated above the closed throttle condition, the time to torque when the throttle pedal is pressed again is reduced.

  • Who led the development of Mustang RTR? Ford or RTR? This was a true partnership between Ford and RTR Vehicles. Over two years, we drew on Ford’s engineering capability and the expertise and passion of Vaughn Gittin Jr. and the RTR Vehicles team to craft the most thrilling, fun-to-drive Mustang ever.

  • What makes Mustang RTR different from an RTR that a Mustang customer can purchase themselves? The Ford Mustang RTR represents a new chapter in the collaboration between Ford and RTR Vehicles. Engineered and built by Ford at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant, the factory Ford built Mustang RTR is inspired by RTR’s passion for performance, design, and excitement behind the wheel. It’s based on the Mustang EcoBoost platform and backed by Ford’s factory warranty. This production model brings RTR’s spirit to a wider audience, giving enthusiasts an authentic way to experience refined performance and unmistakable presence that define every RTR vehicle. In comparison, RTR Vehicles’ Spec models are built from the Mustang GT platform, upfitted by RTR after leaving the factory, and covered by an RTR Vehicles warranty that matches Ford’s three-year/36,000-mile warranty.

  • Will Mustang RTR come to Mustang GT or Dark Horse? We don’t comment on speculation on future product.

  • What tires does Mustang RTR come with? Mustang RTR comes with 255/40/19 Goodyear tires.

  • Does Mustang RTR come with Brembo brakes? How large and how many pistons? Mustang RTR has the same Brembo brakes as the Mustang GT Performance Package. It includes 15.3-inch discs and six-piston calipers in front and 14.0-inch discs with four-piston calipers at the rear.

  • How is Mustang RTR different than the other RTR-badged Mustang models, like the Spec 5? Mustang RTR is assembled at Flat Rock Assembly Plant like any other Mustang. It’s a Ford vehicle through and through and represents only the second time in Mustang’s 60-plus-year history that Ford has partnered with a third-party on a factory-built high-performance Mustang.

  • What’s the benefit of the Mustang Dark Horse components? Mustang RTR draws on the same competition-derived knowhow that’s benefited Mustang Dark Horse. The Mustang Dark Horse rear subframe, stabilizer bars, and adjustable strut top mounts provide increased stiffness, improved response, and better roll control. Overall, the changes were made to make drifting easier for novices.

  • Who’s the customer for Mustang RTR? How are they different than the Mustang EcoBoost buyer? Mustang RTR is for enthusiasts first and foremost. They crave the visceral driving experience that comes with a Mustang and place a higher value on having a vehicle that’s fun to drive. But they want to take their driving experience to the next level and are younger than the traditional Mustang EcoBoost shopper. They’re even more passionate about sports like Formula Drift, where RTR has won five championships.

  • Why collaborate with RTR? Ford’s partnership with RTR in motorsport, specifically Formula Drift and in Ultra4 off-road racing, has been highly successful with numerous championships to show for it. Beyond the clear tie to motorsports, RTR has a strong relationship with the Mustang target customer and a rich social media presence and speaks to younger and more diverse audiences.

  • How much does Mustang RTR cost? We’ll have more to share on pricing closer to launch.

  • When will Mustang RTR be available? Orders for Mustang RTR will open in Spring 2026 with deliveries to start in summer.

  • Is Mustang RTR available with a manual transmission? Mustang RTR is available with a 10-speed automatic transmission only.

  • Why no manual transmission? We built a car to meet the vast majority of customer demand, even in this enthusiast-focused segment. We’ll continue to offer manual transmissions on Mustang GT and Mustang Dark Horse.

I've always thought the RTR S650 hood, fender, and rear quarter graphics are the BEST. I really wish I could buy them separate...

I'm betting $8K-$10K. I'm not sure how "accessible" it will really be. $5K and they'd sell.

I'm definitely the target demographic for this. I love everything about this car. Had a 2024 Ecoboost (now a 2025 GT) and have never been ashamed of the 4cyl, in fact very pleasantly surprised by it and like it better than my GT in some ways, which I've written about on here before.

I've also complained on here about how the Ecoboost was "Neutered by stability control" (title of my thread from a year ago) and you can't fully disable ESC to do drifts, donuts, other "enthusiast activities".

This car is exactly what I want (except decals, I prefer clean). BUT the biggest issue will be price... I'm personally an extreme miser 'value shopper' and most young people aren't willing to even buy Mustangs today for current Ecoboost money. Hard to imagine many will go for a hot Ecoboost that costs likely equal/more than a GT.

I can't imagine only 7 replies to this thread. If the RTR was based on the V8 GT, the thread would have a dozen or more pages by now!

Come on guys, let us not short-change the Eco-Boost. As Will2 mentioned, there is nothing to be ashamed about. One comparison about the GT... Corner really hard, and a drift brake becomes a necessity else the oversteer will be a real fender bender, or worse!

So this car has an "auto-drift" mode, kind of like a video game cheat code. It makes sense since this car is frankly targeted at the video game/tokyo drift generation.

From analyzing the videos of this car "drifting" (1: Ford's PR release, 2: a K&N Filters Facebook post), this is what I have deduced the car does:
- car in Track Mode
- hit ESC button 1x
- use Drift Brake to enter a turn/slide
- full throttle to break traction (sounds like a lawnmower)
- car will automatically pinch individual brakes to help you "auto-steer" as you drag the ass around

It helps you steer while you maintain full throttle (to keep the rear tires from gripping back up). It's like Line Lock, but with steering modulation

So it may be a $2,195 package according to this Raiti's Rides video

If true, would be a great deal because the cost of upgraded wheels/tires/RTR grille/exterior touches alone is worth that. And you get big Brembos, Dark Horse suspension bits, the GT steering rack, the GT radiator fan, and a couple computer tricks to allow drifting. This is also much cheaper than the Ecoboost Performance Package that was available on 2024's.

So I kinda doubt it will only be $2,195, or maybe only available on higher trims.

Did some more digging and I think he's mistaken or got confused by what the rep told him. In order to add the RTR package, you have to have the "High" trim first, which itself costs $2,195. Personally, I suspect the RTR package will be like $5K.
