I feel like this is what I experienced as well. TBH, I dont use custom mode. I'm typically normal mode with track exhaust (set as fav button.. aka star) or track mode itself.

If I just have Google Maps up (no navigation or with navigation ) it will pop up differently on CarPlay. Like a message notification via text with the band and the strength.
