It isn't just for cooling of course. In the UK it is as much for demisting! 'Auto' is full climate control so the car gets to the chosen temperature by warming or cooling the car and then maintaining it.

It needs more than that I'm afraid. I have always pressed 'auto' on day 1, set the temperature and then never touched it again. Have done that for at least 30 years!
