Memorial Day has always been a difficult one for me.

After serving more than a decade in both the Army and the Marine Corps, I’ve lost friends… brothers and sisters… both during deployments and after coming home. That kind of loss never gets easier. Their memories stay with me every single day, and they always will.

During my years of service, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were at their height. Much of my time was spent with Iraq. With friends who fought in the push, Fallujah, Ramadi, Mosul, and so on. I got to spend some time in places like Ubaydi or other cities/bases in western Iraq. And despite the hardships, I wouldn’t trade a single moment of serving alongside the men and women I did.

But war leaves scars long after the battlefield is behind you. Too many friends were lost overseas, and too many were lost after we came home. I miss them every day. They will never be forgotten.

So this Memorial Day, I ask everyone to take a moment of silence and remember our fallen heroes. Their sacrifice stretches through every generation of American history — from the Revolutionary War, to the Argonne Forest in WWI, to D-Day and Iwo Jima in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and beyond.

If it weren’t for the brave men and women who stood against tyranny, fascism, persecution, and oppression, none of the freedoms we enjoy today would exist.

Even the hobbies and passions we love wouldn’t exist.
