I took my first longish trip today - about 90 miles. I set the GPS for the destination and it was working fine for about half way. Then the right, main display stopped updating. I could switch to the small display which shows the GPS path on the left and other info on the right. This is when I noticed it was using my iPhone's GPS - NOT the internal one.

Two issues:
1) Why did the main display stop updating while the small one was fine?
2) How do I keep the car from using the iPhone GPS?

I have encountered issues with Apple CarPlay while using Google Maps. It switches north and south intermittently. It's hard to explain but let's say you are traveling north (on the map) and suddenly it gets confused and it switches from North to south.... It's very annoying. I had to turn the car off and on again and it started guiding me normally..... It has happened a few times in the last 3 months.

I wish there was a way to prevent the car from using the Apple GPS.

1. Start engine
2. Begin trip
3. While traveling down the roadway at a high rate of speed, open window
4. Throw that piece of shit iPhone out of the window.

Don’t connect and it won’t. Think of carplay as a limited application screen mirror. Carplay may use some local (as in the builtin) system to render but the ‘info’ (source of data) will come from the phone.

About the only thing I'd like it to do is make and answer phone calls.

Lol, was just about to say you can get to your music (on the phone) without ‘carplay’ but calls may need to use bluetooth. Although, i haven’t tried that yet.

Toggle off your WiFi before you get in your car so Apple CarPlay won’t connect. Bluetooth should be on if you want music and want to make calls but apparently, you’ve pulled “X” destination up before traveling and it defaults to Apple CarPlay if your WiFi, or USB-C cable is in use.

when my Android phone is plugged into the car it goes right to WAZE and uses my phones GPS , bypassing the Ford system

The problem with the manufacturer installed GPS/Navigation is unless you are using the cellular modem in the car and connecting to the navigation servers, you are going to be using the pre-loaded maps in the car, and they are out of date before the car is even delivered.

My Toyota's used to require the purchase of a SD card to get map updates, and they were not cheap, and they were always a year out of date.

The best navigation there is IMHO is a stand alone GPS unit that is current on updates.
I'll still run a stand alone Garmin where I can easily see it in my field of vision when driving when I am running back and forth to Florida even all my cars now have in dash factory navigaton

It does not need cellular or internet service to work and yes there are places where cell signal can be unobtainable.

The next best alternative is download the maps from Google Maps for the regions you will be driving in and store them on your phone, updating them monthly.
