Ford has been fined 165 million by the NHTSA for not recalling 2020 vehicles with defective back up cams "quickly enough".
"The agency said Ford was too slow to recall vehicles with faulty rearview cameras, and it failed to give the agency complete information, which is required by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Act."
According to the AP article; Ford received multiple failed BUC warranty claims in Feb-Apr of 2020, and ultimately issued a recall in Sept of 2020; followed by an additional recall later.
I have to admit I'm somewhat baffled by this fine. I've read a couple articles (linked below) on this issue; neither of them mentions any injuries or fatalities caused by any failed BUCs; which for the vast majority of automotive history didn't exist. FORD issued a recall; just not quick enough to suit the NHTSA .
Why is the fine going to the FedGov instead of the owners of the vehicles whose BUCs failed?
Why is the fine so large (second largest in NHTSA history) for a defect that apparently didn't injure anyone?
Any time you increase operating costs for a business it's quite likely the costs will get taken out of the employees AND passed along to customers. DUH!! So, thanks for protecting us NHTSA!
