Id love more context to this. The back half of the transmission usually means output shaft, which would make sense. Are you saying they replaced the entire transmission? Because that seems like major overkill and usually the dealers will opt for a rebuild instead.
Its recommend but not required. My dealer replaced it with the last oil change. Previous plugs had a separate gasket that you could replace without the plug.
Note that the gen 3 coyotes had a composite oil pan which meant the plugs were not reusable.
